Hair Transplants
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
FUE is the technique used most often by Dr. Epstein, where he utilizes his custom-designed E-Fue system as well as the WAW system from Europe and the Trivellini system from South America to optimize hair growth while minimizing scarring. With FUE, patients are able to shave the head in the future without worrying about any linear donor site scar. The transplanted hairs are placed into recipient sites in the scalp (or beard or eyebrows) for optimal hair growth direction, pattern, and angulation. This is an essentially painless procedure, usually performed under oral sedation and local anesthesia but, if desired, twilight sedation is available.
Reparative Procedures
Some patients seek Dr. Epstein for revision work to correct a prior hair transplant that left scarring or an unnatural appearance. Most commonly this work involves the removal with re-transplanting of unaesthetic transplanted hairs, along with additional hair grafting, usually by the FUE technique. In cases where there is a low supply of scalp donor hairs due to scarring and/or over-harvesting, hairs from the beard or other body areas can be utilized. In cases of extensive scarring, Dr. Epstein may opt to employ other techniques such as hairline excision, scalp micropigmentation, and endoscopic ridge reduction.
No-shave FUE
With this modification on FUE, rather than shaving all the hairs in the donor area as with conventional FUE techniques, only the hairs that are to be harvested for transplanting are trimmed, leaving all the other surrounding hairs in the donor area their original length. This allows the patient to be fully presentable the very next day without any sign of having had a procedure performed.

Body Hair Transplants (BHT)

Body to Scalp
Dr. Epstein is one of a handful of surgeons who routinely harvest hairs from the chest, back, and primarily the beard for use on the scalp. Once transplanted, these hairs will then grow similar to scalp hairs in most cases. Regrowth rates tend to be somewhat lower with chest and back hairs, but not usually so with beard hairs, and the use of specially designed FUE devices can help optimize regrowth. Because of the sensitivity, most cases of chest and back hair extraction are performed under twilight sedation.
Scalp to Body
When more hair is desired in other parts of the face or body, such as the beard, eyebrows, chest, even pubic region, hair can be transplanted from the scalp into these areas. There is likely no doctor who has performed more of these face and body hair transplant procedures worldwide.

Beard Transplants
When more facial hair is desired, Dr. Epstein can create the desired look, whether to the entire beard or specific areas such as the goatee or sideburns, using techniques he has largely developed through the performing of more than 1,000 of these procedures. Facial hair transplants can also be used to conceal acne and other types of scars, as well as restore hair lost as a result of prior laser hair removal. The donor hairs most commonly come from the scalp, which typically grow like normal facial hair in their texture and other characteristics, and can be shaved or trimmed as desired, however in select cases hair from other areas of the beard can be used.
The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia with oral sedation, although twilight sedation is offered. Taking four to eight hours to perform, each graft is individually harvested by FUE techniques, then dissected down to contain just the hairs that are then placed into thousands of recipient sites, each made one at a time by Dr. Epstein, with attention to the angle, direction, and position.
Eyebrow Transplants
This is a procedure for men and women who who desire fuller, more aesthetic appearing eyebrows. Whether the eyebrows are overly thin or flat or too arched from over plucking or genetics or aging, or missing hairs in a scar that is the result of trauma, they can be restored using techniques largely developed by Dr. Epstein himself, including the use of tiny blades half a millimeter in thickness into which the hairs get placed.
The procedure takes three to five hours to perform, most commonly with an oral sedative (although twilight anesthesia is offered) and local anesthesia. It is meticulous work, done with strict attention to detail and aesthetics. With his having performed more than 1,300 eyebrow transplants, there is likely no other surgeon with the same experience as Dr. Epstein and his special eyebrow team.
